Pacific Avenue, San Francisco
This garden, tucked into rising topography behind a vintage Pacific Heights home, measures 19ft x 32 ft. The client sought a pleasant space to linger as well as appreciate from indoors. She wanted something unexpected—while preserving four spindly Birch trees screening her from an adjacent multistory home. Randy Thueme Design took a gestural approach to the garden—one that reflected the client’s passion as a major collector of Japanese calligraphy and ink painting. The concept was to wrap the space, including new Birch trees, in a three-dimensional composition of stone, concrete, and copper—much as purchases are wrapped in Japan—simply, elegantly, and with great respect.
